Under the Skyway Bridge

Every once in a while, a cool perk drops into my lap and I get to do something a little bit out of the ordinary. Last week, I got a call to come and do a special edition of the Inside the Rays television show for the Sun Sports network. I'd get to fish with host Whit Watson, a good friend of mine and the previous host of the Chevy Florida Fishing Report, and a couple of the active Tampa Bay Rays players.

Since I hadn't seen Watson for some time, I eagerly accepted the offer and made space on my calendar for some inshore fishing. The plan was to meet our guide down in St. Petersburg beach in Florida and hit Tarpon Key early in the morning to try for some redfish and trout and then head over to the Skyway Bridge later in the day to target the big tarpon that were feeding on the pogy schools.

Everything went according to plan, and after meeting our guide at the ramp, we motored over to Tarpon Key. The water was absolutely gorgeous, crystal clear and moving up onto the flat - perfect conditions to find feeding redfish. As we moved along the edge of the key with our trolling motor trying to spook up some fish, I got know our celebrity ballplayers, pitchers Wade Davis and Jeff Niemann. First off, both of these boys are huge! Davis is the tiny one at 6 feet 5 inches tall and 250 pounds, while Niemann's 6-foot-9-inch, 280-pound frame must scare the crap out of opposing batters. I'd back out of the box if either of these guys were throwing paper balls!
