A fishing season cut by two months and a catch quota lower by 150 tonnes have been announced for 2010-11. There are claims that this may push some operators out of South Australia’s (SA) sector. Last fishing season ran from October to May with a quota of 1,400 tonnes, while next season will run from 1 November to 30 April with a quota of 1,250 tonnes. The South Eastern Professional Fisherman’s Association (SEPFA), about 160 members strong, has responded by rejecting South Australia Fisheries Minister Michael O’Brien’s decision calling a forum next week so fishers can protest the closure of October fishing. They will lobby against the changes.
