Murray Cod Fishing Ban Lifted

A change to fishing policy along the Murray will let South Australian anglers catch murray cod. The change will apply for the next two years after fishing for murray cod had been banned back in 2009. Fishing for the cod will still be banned during an annual closure season between August and the end of November. SA Fisheries Minister Michael O'Brien says strong penalties will apply for offences.

"The feedback from river-based communities and recreational fishers was that they understood the importance of protecting the species but there had to be a balance because recreational fishing is a great tourism activity," he said.
