Tourist Watched Fisherman Drown

A tourist watched in horror yesterday as a fisherman dived into the water and drowned while trying to retrieve a lost fishing rod. The 45-year-old fisherman died in front of witnesses who saw him struggling in the water about 1pm. His body was recovered by Sunshine Coast Water Police about 100 meters from shore. Phanupong Phamuang was sightseeing at Point Arkwright, just south of Coolum, when he saw the man fishing off rocks. The tourist, from Denmark, said what he saw next was “like a bad dream”.
